October Dinner Meeting Inspires Advocacy To Action
The BPW Langley October dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 21st was a sold-out evening packed with inspiration, global news and business. This was the second in the BPW Langley 2015/16 ?From Advocacy To Action? series.
Highlights from the evening
BPW Canada Past President Jill Worobec (and BPW Langley charter member) gave us an update into the current work that BPW International and National have been doing to help women. Jill also spoke about some of the history of BPW such as BPW Calgary founding member Nellie McClung, who was also member of the ?Famous Five?. The Famous Five were instrumental in the landmark legal decision made for Canadian women on October 18, 1929, when women were legally recognized as ?persons? under British common law.
85th Anniversary Celebrations of BPW International
BPW Langley member, Margo Almond just returned from the celebrations held October 9 ? 11th at Parliament in Valletta, Malta. She talked about her experience there and a brief summary of some of the incredible work BPW has done since the 1930?s. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic resource over the years. Today BPW International has clubs in 100+ countries across 6 continents. BPW holds a very prestigious category status at the United Nations ? a position that has been held since 1947. Notable Canadian members of the BPW include Emily Carr, Kim Campbell (former Prime Minister of Canada), Mobina Jaffer, Roberta Bondar and Rita Johnston (former Premiere of BC).

Susan Friesen of eVision Media gave a brief and informative overview on Social Media with a focus on using LinkedIn for marketing and networking online. A special offer exclusive to our members and guests was announced for her new LinkedIn webinar course.
Guest Speaker,?Tara Teng?brought tears to our eyes
Tara Teng is a TV host, Miss World Canada 2012, a human rights activist, a World Vision ambassador and works with various organizations around the world to combat gender-based violence and human trafficking. She is a voice for justice, love and mercy worldwide and held the audience spellbound with her extraordinary stories of oppression and miracles she has experienced in her work to end slavery and violence against women and children. Tara spoke about how one person can make a difference and cited several movements that have started in BC ? even by our own Langley citizens ? that have made a huge impact globally. This evening was Tara Teng?s first impression of BPW and she expressed how amazed and inspired she was with the breadth and scope of the organization and how much work has been done over the many years and continues to be done for victims and people in need all over the world.

Sue Hammell, MLA Kickstarts our ?From Advocacy To Action? Year!
The Honourable Sue Hammell, MLA Surrey-Green Timbers gave an inspiring start to the Business & Professional Women (BPW) Langley chapter?s new year theme ?From Advocacy To Action?.
Ms. Hammell was their guest speaker on Wednesday September 16th at the Sandman Signature Hotel Langley. Sue currently serves as the critic for Mental Health and Addictions and the Deputy House Leader.
Even though the nation is in the midst of an election, the evening was apolitical. BPW Langley is a non-partisan organization and Ms. Hammell spoke to the advocacy issues of the club: Violence Against Women & Children, Mental Health & Addiction and Women?s Equality.
During the lively presentation and discussion, Ms. Hammell provided some valuable insight as a woman in the political arena. She spoke about how there is a second wave of young women rising to be heard on the topic of equality for all.
To help stop the violence and also to help the needy in our community, Ms. Hammell encouraged BPW Langley to keep up the good work of informing governments at all levels of their work as politicians take their constituents issues seriously.
Ms. Hammell is well aware of the scope and breadth of BPW and noted the strength of the club with its provincial, national and international ties.

Year end dinner meeting installed two new executive
Our BPW Langley Dinner Meeting on June 17th was held at the Sandman Hotel in Langley and went very well. It was a beautiful summer evening of socializing, networking, empowerment and advocacy.
We had two interesting presentations from our members:
Patricia Dominguez spoke on nutrition and living cancer free and
Camille Bowling also spoke about nutrition and a new health & weight loss program that is launching next month.
As well, we officially installed ? through a candle-lighting ceremony ? two ‘powerhouse’ ladies to our executive: Ann Burnett as 2nd Vice President for the remaining 1 year term and Tracy Scanks, whom graciously stepped into the 1st Vice President position a few months ago, when it became vacant.
We have a remarkable team and we are planning some fabulous dinner meetings and events starting again in September. Women working on empowerment, education and advocacy for women!

EFT and the Power of Law Attraction with Catherine Simmons
A super evening at our May Business & Professional Women Langley Dinner Meeting! Everything went like clockwork despite the fact I could not find the gavel from my move – probably packed away in a box somewhere, lol.
We were delighted to have special guests from BPW BC & Yukon, Heather Mary Stewart, President and Barbara Fehrmann, Secretary. Heather told us about the upcoming Provincial BPW AGM on June 13th – a jam packed day ending with an evening celebration that is sure to be spectacular.
You are welcome to observe the AGM proceedings and everyone is invited to the AGM Dinner and Silent Auction with special guest speaker. Jenny Gulamani-Abdulla, BA, J.D., Immigration Consultant and BPW Canada 1st Vice President will speak on Equal Pay for Women.
This event is open to BPW members, supporters and all other members of the public. Jenny has already travelled widely for BPW, most recently to New York City where she represented BPW Canada, joining our national president, Coleen Allan at the BPW International Leadership Summit in March, 2015.

We had informative member spotlights by May Stokes and Bonnie Goldstone and our guest spotlight was provided by none other than Michael Harris – yes, men are welcome too, and do attend our meetings!
Our guest speaker Catherine Simmons spoke from the heart about her mental health crisis and being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and how she was able to heal and the role our thoughts and emotions play in our physical well-being and quality of life.
She talked about the importance of accepting ourselves and how to attract what you want into your life – not to force it and to just let it flow.
She also did an amazing EFT demonstration with member Camille Bowling who came to the meeting with neck pain from a fall just prior and the pain went from a 7/8 out of 10 in intensity to a 2/3. The mind and neural pathways are fascinating to me.
Tracy Scanks, our 1st VP gave an update on the Advocacy Committee. Lots of plans in the works and the next Advocacy Committee meeting will be held at the Murrayville Pub at 6 pm on June 3rd. If you would like to help women in need please let Tracy know in an email to: tracy@proconadvantage.com.
Our next monthly dinner meeting is on Wednesday, June 17th. As well as our AGM, it will be our year wind-up and social (we do not meet in July & August).
A fun night with a bit of a departure from our regular meeting as we will not have a guest speaker.
Plan on doing some networking, mingling and brainstorming with us. We still have a spot open for one member spotlight. Contact us if you would like to be that one. The guest spotlight will be drawn from any guests that put their name in on the night.

National Women’s Empowerment & Equality with Jane Hall
It was a fantastic evening at the Business & Professional Women Langley – BPW Langley monthly dinner meeting.
Jane Hall was a brilliant speaker and inspiring regarding her past and most recent work with national women’s empowerment and equality – which fits perfectly with our work to educate and empower women in Canada.
Many new faces again at the meeting that promised to come next month. Tracy Scanks, 1st VP gave us an update on our advocacy committee and work with Ishtar Transition house. Tracy also told us to watch for a “Panty Party” or “Underwear Affair” fundraiser coming up in the next few months as a FUNdraiser by our club for Ishtar.
Equal Pay Day is April 14 – 20th (depending on where you are in North America) which marks, on average, how far into the next year a woman must work to earn the same amount made by a man the previous year.
I will be attending the BPW BC & Yukon quarterly board meeting on April 20th as chair of PR & Communications and leading a discussion on enacting specific pay equity legislation for BC. We are one of four provinces in Canada that have not enacted pay equity laws (http://www.equalpaycoalition.org/). Ontario is a leader in this regard and we will look to BPW Ontario for guidance and leadership.
Tonight our club members also passed a motion for BPW Langley to join the Langley Chamber of Commerce, which will be a bonus for all our members. Now as a member of BPW Langley, you will soon be able to enjoy all the benefits and privileges of being a Chamber member.
April 30th is our year end and so our membership drive is on. We have a free draw offer for a free ticket to our September dinner meeting for members that pay their annual dues on or before our next meeting on May 20th, so don’t delay and get in on it now before it’s too late.

Networking & Community Support at Our March Meeting
It was a brilliant Business & Professional Women Langley – BPW Langley Dinner & Networking Event tonight and we packed a lot into the evening!
There were so many new faces. It was great to meet new friends and learn about about them and their businesses during the networking part of the evening.
The power of Facebook and social media is amazing! Each month we sign up at least one or two new members that got to know about us online.
Our BPW VP,Tracy Scanks just returned from Cuba and is doing a fantastic job with our Advocacy Committee.
It was heartwarming to see sincere interest and involvement in our cause for Violence Against Women and Children and our work with the transition houses in the area.
Tracy and her team have done so much in such a short time – with only one meeting so far under their belt.
And it is wonderful to see more people join in the cause tonight along with a message from our Charter Member Jill Worobec, that she and Kamal Dhillon, Author “Black & Blue Sari” will be joining our Advocacy Committee, as well. What an honour to have Kamal join us as someone that has lived the nightmare and continues to work hard everyday in the front lines to make the world a better place. It is exciting to imagine what we can do over the next year as a team.

Troy Gaglardi, the Director of Community Resources for the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope in Langley joined us for dinner tonight as well. We were very pleased and honoured to be able to present the Gateway with a cheque from BPW Langley for $717.82.
These were funds raised from our Silent Auction Dinner last December and I congratulate our members and guests that helped make it a success for us and for the Gateway of Hope.
BPW Langley Charter Member and Mentor, Barbara Hall led the group in the BPW Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony for International Women’s Day and I passed on a message sent to us from the BPW International President Yasmin Darwich in honour of the event.
Once again, I have received so much back from being a part of this great heart centred organization – BPW Langley.

Stress Relief Was Topic in February’s Meeting
It was another fabulous evening for our February dinner meeting last night!
The banquet room at the Sandman Signature Inn was definitely a great meeting place that gave us more privacy. The food and service was superb.
Sheryl Stanton gave a wonderful talk about Stress Relief and the fascinating subject of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).
Sheryl is a Professional Speaker, Author and Stress Relief Specialist. Her presentation will be about the 3 Massive Mistakes That Women Make That Keep Them Overstressed, Unhappy and Unhealthy. Why We Make Them AND How To Eliminate Them From Our Lives.
A big thank you to all our members and guests that brought their gently used business suits, shoes, accessories for our Advocacy Committee cause of helping and empowering women that are victims of domestic violence and abuse.
Our executive team, mentors and members care so much and work so hard to help make a difference in our community. I am grateful to be a servant leader to this amazing group of women.
